Physics 1.1.12 Flashcards
What happens to the Energy in Transfers that are not Useful?
The Energy is Dissipated to the Surroundings.
What happens to the Temperature of an Object when Energy is Transferred to its Thermal Store?
It increases.
Useful Energy can be defined as:
The Energy that is Transferred from Store to Store and used for an intended purpose.
Wasted Energy can be defined as:
The Energy that is not Useful for the intended purpose and is Dissipated to the Surroundings.
Why do Mechanical Processes often become Wasteful?
Because they cause rises in Temp., due to Friction.
How can we prevent Mechanical Processes from being as Wasteful as they are?
Lubrication- reduces Friction.
How does Insulation prevent the Dissipation of Thermal Energy?
It keeps the Thermal Energy within it.
What does the Effectiveness of Insulation depend on? (2)
-Low Thermal Conductivity.
-Thickness.
