Physics Flashcards
What is charge measured in?
Coulombs
What is current measured in?
Amps
What is voltage or potential difference measured in?
Volts
What is energy measured in?
Joules
What is resistance measured in?
OHMS
What is power measured in?
Watts
What is charge?
The flow of electrons
What is current?
The speed of flow of electrons
What is voltage?
The energy required to move charge
How can two insulators become charged?
Friction
What is induction?
When an unmagnetised object is magnetised when close to a magnetised object
EG: MAGNETIC OR ELECTRICAL
Why does friction cause objects to become electrically charged?
Electrons will be transferred from one object to another result in positive and negatively charged objects
What is sparking ?
parking is what occurs when the air between two objects becomes ionised by a large voltage and therefore starts conducting. Two charged objects, that have air between them, can discharge by a spark between them. This will happen either when the charge becomes large enough or when the distance between the objects becomes small enough.
What is used to power a dc?
cells or batteries
What is used to power an ac?
Generators
What is frequency of the mains supply in the UK?
50HZ
50 waves to and fro per sec
Examples of good conductors?
- all metals, particularly copper, gold and silver
- carbon (in the form of graphite)
- ionic solutions.
Examples of good insulators?
- most non-metals, particularly plastics, rubber, dry wood, air, vacuum.
How to calculate current?
Current = charge/time
What is a milliamp or microamp?
milliamp= 1x10-3 microamp= 1x10-6
Where does current flow in the circuit?
from the positive to the negative
How is resistance connected to the voltmeter or the ammeter?
Voltmeter has high resistance to prevent current from travelling through it
Ammeter has very low resistance to prevent the reduction of current used to measure
How to calculate resistance?
Resistance= voltage/current
What is kilo-ohm or mega ohm?
Kiloohm = 1x103
mega ohm= 1x106
Describe the v I graph of a fixed resistor?
Straight-line with a fixed resistance going through the origin
Describe the v I graph of a filament lamp?
curve as temperature increases the voltage increases
What is a thermistor?
AS temp increases resistance decreases
What is a LDR?
LIGHT DEPENDENT RESISTOR
Factors of a series circuit?
Current is constant
voltage is shared in a series circuit
Factors of a parallel circuit?
Current split proportionally to resistanc
Voltage is constant across each branch
How to calculate voltage from energy?
Voltage= energy/charge
How to calculate power?
Power= energy/time Power= voltage x current Power= current2 x resistance
