Physics 1 Flashcards
What are the 8 energy stores?
Thermal / internal energy
Kinetic
Gravitational Potential
Elastic potential
Chemical
Magnetic
Electrostatic
Nuclear
Name the 4 ways energy is transferred:
Mechanically (by a force doing work)
Electrically (work done by moving charges)
Heating
Radiation (eg. light or sound)
What is a system?
A fancy word for a single object (eg. air in a piston)
OR
a group of objects (eg. colliding vehicles)
What happens when a system changes?
Energy is transferred
What is a closed system?
A system where neither matter nor energy can enter or leave.
The net change in the total energy of a closed system is always zero.
How is energy transferred when boiling water in a kettle?
1) Energy is transferred electrically to the thermal energy store of the kettle’s heating element.
2) The kettle’s heating element transfers energy by heating to the water’s thermal energy store.
What is ‘work done’ just another way of saying?
‘Energy transferred’
