Physical Science Vocabulary Flashcards
Light
A form of radiant energy that travels in waves and can move through the vacuum of space.
Transmittance
The passing of light through a substance.
Reflection
The bouncing of light or heat off an object.
Refraction
The bending of light as it moves from one substance to another.
Opaque
An object that does not allow light to pass through it.
Translucent
An object that allows only some light to pass through it.
Transparent
An object that allows light to pass through it.
Concave Lens
A lens that is thicker at the edges than at its center; makes object appear smaller.
Convex Lens
A lens that is thicker at the center than at its edges; makes objects appear larger.
Sound
A form of energy created by vibrations that travels as waves through matter.
Vibration
A back and forth movement of matter.
Volume
The loudness of a sound.
Pitch
How high or low a sound is.
Frequency
The number of vibrations per second.
Medium
Anything that vibrates, allowing sound to pass through it.
Force
The strength or energy that moves an object.
Motion
The act of going from one location to another; movement.
Mass
The amount of matter in an object.
Inertia
The tendency of an object to resist any change in its motion
Friction
A force that works against motion.
Acceleration
A change in speed over time.
