Physical Science Vocabulary Flashcards
Element
Pure substances made of only one type of atom
Atom
The basic unit of matter made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons
Molecule
A group of two or more elements held together by bonds
Compound
A molecule with two or more DIFFERENT elements
Cohesion
Causes water molecules to stick together and form droplets
Adhesion
Causes water molecules to stick to other things (ie: windows, spiderwebs, leaves, etc) and is stronger than cohesion
Physical Properties:
Characteristics that you can observe without a chemical reaction.
Chemical Properties
A characteristic that you observe through a chemical reaction
Chemical Reaction
The action of one or more substances converted into one or more DIFFERENT substances
Reactant
Elements or compounds which exist PRIOR to a chemical reaction
Product
New substances that are created by the rearranging of atoms AFTER a chemical reaction
Combustion
A chemical reaction to create burning
Air pressure
The force exerted on a surface by the air above it as gravity pulls it to earth
