Physical Science deck 2 Flashcards
Indicator
A chemical compound that changes color when it reacts with certain other chemicals.
The PH scale
A scale that indicates the strength of the acid or base.
Chemical Analysis
A test with a chemical reaction.
Types of chemical analysis
- flame test 2. indicator 3. spectroscope
What defines a substance as an acid?
A substance that has a hydronium Ion
What is a Hydronium Ion?
An ion that combines with a water molicule
How is a weak acid different from a strong acid?
A weak acid holds on to hydrogen atoms while a strong acid easily gives up hydrogen atoms.
What are some characteristics of an acid?
They are good conductors of electricity, corrosive, react with indicators, and sour.
What defines a substance as a base?
Any substance that forms a Hydroxide Ion
What is a hydroxide ion?
An Ion that has an oxygen and a hydrogen atom
How is a weak base different from a strong base?
A weak base doesn’t burn your skin while a strong base does burn your skin.
What are some common characteristics of a base?
Bitter taste, slippery, caustic, good conductors of electricity.
How is salt formed?
When an acid and a base mix.
Two common characteristics of salt
They have a salty flavor and form distinct crystal shapes
How are salt families named?
By the acid from which they originate
