Physical Science Flashcards
what is kinetic energy
kinetic energy is the energy an object possesses due to motion
what is gravitational potential energy
the energy an object has due to its position above the earth (energy due to its light)
what are the properties of non-metals
Non-metals are in between the noble gases and metalloids
Not ductile
poor conductors of heat and electricity
soft
dull
brittle
not tough or strong
the properties of alkali metals
Alkaila metals are in period one
they are highly reactive
high thermal and electrical conductivity
luster
ductile
malleable
how are the elements arranged in the modern periodic table
In the modern periodic table, it is ordered by atomic weight and valence shell and valence electrons
why did Mendeleev leave the places in his version of the periodic table
Mendeleev left spaces because he knew there was elements but they haven’t been discovered
what are periods
Horizontal
Periods tell how many electron shells there are
what are groups
Vertical
groups tell how many valence electrons each element has
what is convection
is where particles near the heat source become excited and vibrate, becoming less dense and therefore rise. When cooled it falls and the cycle continues until equilibrium
what is conduction
the transfer of heat from one substance due to direct contact
what is radiation
is the energy released in the form of particles or electromagnetic waves or ultraviolet waves
what is displacement
change in position in a particular direction
velocity formula
velocity = displacement/time
thermal energy is transferred to earth by….
radiation
what is thermal equilibrium
where 2 objects become the same temperature and therefore there is no net transfer of energy
Kinetic energy formula
1/2 x m x v2
GPE formula
U=mgh
speed formula
s= d/t
acceleration formula
a = (v1-v2)/t
Properties of noble gases
colourless
odourless
low chemical reactivity
properties of alkaline earth metals
Period 2
reactive but not as reactive as period 1
good conductors of electricity
low melting point
low density
reacts easy with halogens
properties of halogens
period 17
low melting point
low boiling point
properties of transition metals
period 4-12
good conductors of heat and electricty
malleable
high melting point
hard and tough
high density
properties of metals
to the left of metalloids
malleable
ductile
shiny
good heat+electricity conductors
solid at room temp(except mercury)
