Physical Quantities Flashcards
1
Q
How to measure the thickness of paper?
(no micrometer)
A
- Measure the length of 100 sheets using micrometer.
- Dividde answer/reading by 100 to obtain the average thickness of one sheet of paper.
- Take the readings perpendicular to avoid parrellex error.
2
Q
How to measure the thickness of paper?
(with micrometer)
A
- Check zero micrometer.
- Place 5 sheets between arms of micrometer.
- Close micrometer.
- Take reading from horizontal and vertical scale.
- Divide answer/reading by 5 to obtain average thickness.
3
Q
How to measure the circumference of a cylinder?
A
- Obtain a string.
- Rotate string around cylinder.
- Measure length of string.
4
Q
How to measure the volume of an irregular object?
A
- Pour water into measuring cylinder (V1).
- Submerge/immerse rock in measuring cylinder.
- Take new reading (V2).
Volume of rock = V2 - V1
5
Q
Define density.
A
It is the mass per unit volume.
6
Q
How to meaure the volume of a floating irregular object?
A
- Pour water into measuring cylinder (V1).
- Submerge/immerse rock in measuring cylinder.
- Tie rock to a sinking metal so it can sink.
- Take new reading (V2).
Volume of rock = V2 - V1

Q
How to measure the time of one swing in a pendulum?
A
- Check zero stopwatch.
- Start stopwatch.
- Let pendulum oscillate 50 times.
- Record time.
- Divide time by 50 to get average time of one swing.
- Repeat and take average.
