Physical Properties Flashcards
How are halogens found naturally?
As stable halide ions or compounds
What kind of molecules are all halogens?
Diatomic molecules (Molecules made of only two atoms)
How many electrons are on halogen’s outer energy level?
7 electrons
What’s the most common reaction that happens to halogens?
Redox reactions
Are halogens oxidising agents or reducing agents?
Oxidising agent (because another species is likely to donate an electron to them)
What conditions do there need to be for a halide to be replaced by a halogen?
The halogen needs to be higher in the group to be able to replace the halogen?
What increases as you go up group 7?
Reactivity
What decreases as you go up the group?
Size of halogen atoms, number of electrons
Why does reactivity increase as you go up the group?
-The valence shell is closer to the
nucleus
-Less shielding overall
-Greater nuclear attraction
-Stronger oxidation agents
What colour is chlorine when dissolved in water
Pale green
What colour is chlorine when dissolved in cyclohexane?
Pale Green
What colour is bromine when dissolved in water?
Orange
What colour is bromine when dissolved in cyclohexane?
Slightly darker orange
What colour is iodine when dissolved in water?
Brown
What colour is iodine when dissolved in cyclohexane?
Violet
