What is a ‘Bay’?
A dent or curve in the coastline

A piece of high land that goes into the sea (the opposite of a bay)
What is a ‘Mountain range’?
A group or line of mountains
What is a ‘Mountain peak’?
The highest point at the top of a mountain
What is a ‘Hill’?
A higher area that is not as large as a mountain
What is a ‘Valley’?
A low area between hills or mountains
Why are bays suitable for human settlement?
Bays protect humans from bad weather and rough seas.
People can fish in bays.
Why do people settle where there are oil reserves?
Oil is a fuel. Therefore, people have settled near this natural resource in search of work
Do people settle in swamps?
No. They are difficult to build in, and some areas can breed disease.
Why do people settle near rivers?
It is a source of water
It is a sources of food (fish)
It provides a way to travel
Do people settle on hills?
Gentle hill - good for farming
Steep hill - difficult to build on
Why don’t people settle on mountains?
They are difficult to build on
Why do people settle in mineral rich areas?
For employment reasons
Why do people settle in fertile plains?
Soil is nutrient rich, and good for growing crops.
As a result people move here.
