No, although it is continuous it is not smooth

No
Are growth rates the same through the whole body?
No, growth rates vary in different parts of the body, for example the head circumferences grows more rapidly than other areas in the first months of life
When referring to growth what two important dimensions should be considered?
Weight and length/height

Why at birth is a baby’s head circumference measured?
To check the size and growth of the brain

Why is growth measurements helpful for a health visitor ?
They help monitor a child’s health and development but they can also identify other issues for example if an infant in under/overweight or if they are growing to slowly.
On average, how much will infants grow between 1-2 years of age?
About 12cm and gain about 2.5kg
What are Centile lines?
lines on a graph used to show average measurements of height, weight and head circumference. The lines represent the values of the measurements taking into account age and sex.

What does development describe?
Changes that might be complex and involve ability levels altering
In what order does development happen for the body?
From head to toe, an infant will first be able to control their head, then develop control over thier body, then their legs, then feet allowing them to crawl and eventually walk.
What are development norms?
They describe the skills that infants, children and adolescence are expected to develop at particular ages to stages in their life
What does PIES stand for
Physical - gross and fine motor skills

Emotional development
Social development
Define development norms
A description of an average set of expectations with respect to a young child’s development.
What is a milestone?
An ability achieved by most children by a certain age. It can involve physical, social, emotional, cognitive and communication skills.
Define gross motor skill
Large movements that involve using large muscles of the body which are required for mobility’s, for example rolling over
Define fine motor skills
Involve smaller movements that require more precise direction and use smaller muscles, fo example picking up a pencil
