Physical Changes Flashcards
Définitions of physical changes in Physical Properties & Changes
Physical - Lustre
the ability for a substance to reflect light
(lustrous, dull)
Physical - Clarity
Describes the ability for a substance to allow light to pass through it
(opaque)
Physical - Hardness
The ability for a substance to be scratched.
hard, soft
Physical - Malleability
The ability for a substance to be bent into new shapes.
non-malleable
Physical - Ductility
The ability for a substance to be pulled into long thin wires/string.
ductile
Physical - Brittleness
The ability for a substance to break.
Quantitative - Viscosity
Resistance of a substance to flow (how easy is it for a substance to flow
(viscous)
Quantitative - Density
Number of particles (mass) in a given space (volume)
Quantitative - Solubility
How easily a substance dissolves in another substance (a liquid). It dissolves if it disappears in the liquid.
(soluble)
Quantitative - Electrical Conductivity
The ability for a substance to allow electricity to flow through it.
Quantitative - Heat Conductivity
The ability for a substance to allow heat to flow through it.
Evidence that a Chemical CHANGE has occured
colour
gas (bubbles)
odour
a new solid
Energy in the form of heat/light/sound
Changing States with heat: physical or Chemical change?
physical
- When an object is heated or cooled (I.e. liquid → gas, solid → liquid, etc.) these are physical changes NOT chemical changes.
It is still the same substance, just in a different form.
Ex. ice, water and water vapour all have the same formula H2O
