Physical and mechanical properties of materials Flashcards
What is Hardness?
how easy can it not get dented?
What is Elasticity?
after load, does it return to normal?
What is Ductility?
Can it be drawn into a thin wire?
What is Toughness?
does it absorb impact without fracturing?
What is Malleability?
can a material be bent/ hammered into shape?
What is Plasticity?
when a solid material is subjected to forces, can it keep its shape?
What is Brittleness?
can a material break without significant deformation?
What is Stress?
a physical quantity that describes forces present during deformation (an object being pulled apart, such as a stretched elastic band, is subject to tensile stress and may undergo elongation).
What is Stiffness?
does an object resists deformation in response to an applied force?
What is Tensile Strength?
how much stress can a material withstand while being stretched?
What is Density?
mass per unit volume for a material.
What is Electrical resistivity?
A property of a material measuring how strongly it resists electric current.
What is Thermal conductivity?
A measure of a material’s ability to conduct heat.
What is viscosity (in liquid)?
thickness (of liquid)
What is corrosion?
does the material deteriorate by chemical or electrochemical reaction with its environment?
