Physical and Chemical Properties Flashcards
flammability
chemical- the ability to be set on fire
density
physical- the degree of the compactness of atoms in an object, how close the atoms are fit together (often making the matter heavy)
temperature
physical- the degree or intensity of heat in an object
color
physical- the pigmentation or hue of an object
hardness
physical- the resistance of a material to be scratched by a mineral/rock
odor
physical- the scent of an object
solubility
physical- the ability to be dissolved
solute
the thing that dissolves
solvent
the liquid that does the dissolving
oxidation
chemical- the reaction created when oxygen is added to a substance or object- example and apple turning brown after it has been cut
luster
physical- the shine of an object or the ability to reflect light
ductility
physical- the ability to be stretched into thin wires
reactivity to water
chemical- the change that occurs when a substance is exposed to water example- lithium fizzes and pops when exposed to water
toxicity
chemical- the ability to be poisonous
combustability
chemical- the ability to burn
corrosiveness
chemical- the ability to breakdown and create new compounds (often resulting in rusting metals)
weathering- physical
the change in shape or size of the land- example- erosion- the river getting larger overtime as it flows taking parts of the sand and dirt down stream
weathering- chemical
the change in color due to photosynthesis- example- the leaves changing color in different seasons
magnetism
physical- the ability to be attracted to metal
conductivitiy
physical- the ability to allow heat and electricity to flow through
