Physical and Chemical Change Flashcards
What are the properties of Physical Change?
- Change in shape or form
- Expansion or contraction
- A change in state (solid, liquid, gas)
- Mixing substances together
Can Physical Change be reversed?
Yes.
What does it mean by change in shape or form?
A force is applied to break, bend, stretch, crush, twist, or compress the object.
What does it mean by expansion or contraction?
Expansion - volume increases, density decreases.
Contraction - volume decreases, density increases.
What does it mean by changes of state?
Melting - Solid to liquid, or
Evaporation - liquid to gas
If it is cooled, it will contract and change state.
Condensation - gas to liquid, or
Freezing - liquid to a solid
What does it mean by mixing substances together?
If you mix two things together no NEW sustances are made.
What does it mean by disslolving?
When a solid (solute) is dissolved in a liquid (solvent), they form a solution.
Can yuo see the solute in a solution?
No, the solute is broken down to such small particle they are invisible.
What is Crystalisation?
When a solvent is removed by boiling or evaporation, and the solute particles join together to form crystals.
