Physical and Chemical Change Flashcards
particle theory of matter
every thing is made up of tiny indivisible particles too small to see
how are particles arranged in different states of matter
Solid - tightly compacted
Liquid - move freely but stay close to one another
gas - far apart and free
chemical change
irreversible . production of gas or smell . bubbles . change of colour . new substance formed . energy production (light, heat ect.)
physical change
no new substance formed . not permanent . change of shape . change of state . expansion / contraction . mixing
how do substances change state
solid –> liquid –> gas
melt –> evaporate–>
freeze <– condensation <–
solid 2 gas = sublimation
gas 2 solid = deposition
reactants and products in chemical reactions
reactants are the starting material products are the end result
reactant –> product
law of conservation of mass
in a chemical reaction mass is neither created nor destroyed
