Physical and Chemical change Flashcards
physical change
a substance changes shape, size, or state or two substances are mixed together
Everything that has mass and takes up space is known as
matter
chemical change
gases, heat, or light is usually released as a new substance as a result of new chemical bonds or broken ones
examples of physical change
ice melting, sugar dissolving in water, making a smoothie, shredding paper, scrunching up paper, etc
examples of chemical change
combustion, cooking an egg, baking a cake, rusting iron, fireworks, etc
what are some indicators of a chemical reaction that only they have?
- new substance is always created
( production/release of light or sound - formation of a new gas
- new solid)
- temperature change
what are indicators of any reaction
- change in colour
- change in texture
- dissolving of a solid
-may be odour
What happens to the atoms of the reacting substances in a chemical change?
the atoms are rearranged and new chemical bonds are formed or recent ones were broken
Anything that burns is known as a
fuel (wood, paper, cloths, alcohol, petrol, etc)
Combustion is
a chemical change where burning occurs
burning
a chemical change that occurs when a fuel combines with oxygen.
fizzing/bubbling indicates
that a new gas has been formed
What are some factors that affect the rate of chemical reactions?
- surface area
-concentration
-temperature
Difference between chemical change and chemical reactions?
Chemical change is the result of a chemical reaction
When particles are heated, is there more energy or less energy?
There is more energy which causes expansion because of the increase of volume
