Physical agents indications and contraindications Flashcards
contraindications for superficial thermotherapy
acute and early subacute traumatic and inflammatory conditions decreased circulation decreased sensation DVT impaired cognition malignant tumors tendoncy toward hemorrage or edema very young or very old patients
paraffin contraindications
allergic rash
open wounds
recent scars or sutures
skin infections
paraffin indications
pain from arthritis or other inflammatory conditions in late subacute or chronic phases
joint stifness
most commonly used on hand/wrist
whirlpool indications
subacute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions
whirlpool contraindications
WOUND MANAGEMENT!!!!
whirlpool precautions
decreased temperature sensation impaired cognition recent skin graft confusion/disorientation deconditioned state
cryotherapy precautions
hypertension impaired temperature sensation open wound over superficial nerve very old or very yong pts cognitive changes
cryotherapy indications/goals
pain reduction reduce or elimiate soft tissue inflammation /swelling reduce muscle spasm reduce spasticity cryokinetics cryostretch management of symptoms in MS
cryotherapy contraindications
cold hypersensitivity cold intolerance cryoglobulinemia peripheral vascular disease impaired temperature sensation raynauds disease paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria over regenerating peripheral nerves
US precautions
acute inflammation
breast implants
open epiphyses
over healing fractures
US contraindications
impaired circulation impaired cognitive function impaired sensation malignant tumors over / near area with thrombophlebitis joint cement over vital organs (brain, ear, eye, heart, etc) exposed or unprotected spinal cord over cardiac pacemakers over abdomen/low back during pregnancy
US goals and indications
modulate pain increase connective tissue extensibility reduce or eliminate soft tissue inflammation accelerate rate of tissue healing reduce or eliminate spasm
phonophoresis indications/goals
pain modulation
decrease inflammation in subacue / chronic musculoskeletal conditions
indications/goal for thermal (continuous) short wave diathermy
increase joint ROM
pain managment
increased tissue healing
indications/goals for nonthermal (pulsed) short wave diathermy
pain control
decrease edema
resolution of acute and chronic infections
wound control and soft tissue healing
contraindications for short wave diathermy
pregnancy cardiac pacemakers neural stimulators implanted/transcutaneous devices such as insulin pump open epiphyses metal implants and jewelry malignancy near testes or eyes over diseased organs over metal loops
short wave diathermy precautions
use near other electrical devices such as computers, radios, cell phones
very obese patients (fat heated excessively )
pts or ohters nearby using intrauterine devices
pregnancy of therapist or other working personnel
goals/indications for mechanical traction
decrease joint stiffness decrease meniscoid blocking muscle spasm degenerative disc disc protrusion joint disease modulate discogenic pain modulate subacute or chronic joint pain reduce nerve root impingement
precautions for mechanical traction
claustrophobia hiatal hernia vascular compromise pregnancy impaired cognition osteoporosis tumor infection RA protracted steriod use
mechanical traction contraindications
acute sprains/strains and inflammation spondylolisthesis fractures postop spinal surgery spinal joint instability or hypermobility spinal cord compression hypertension increased peripheralization of pain numbness or tingling decreased myotomal strength decreased reflex response RA spinal tumors or infections osteoporosis very old or very young vascular compromise (VBI)
intermittent mechanical compression goals/indications
amputation decrease chronic edema postmastectomy lymphedema stasis ulcer venous insufficiency subacute injuries such as ankle sprains
intermittent mechanical compression precautions
impaired sensation
malignancy
uncontrolled hypertension
over area with superficial peripheral nerve
intermittent mechanical compression contraindications
acute inflammation trauma or fracture acute DVT and thrombophlebitis obstructed lymph or venous return arterial revascularization acute pulmonary edema diminished sensation cancer edema with cardiac or renal impairment impaired cognition infection in treatment area hypoproteinemia very young or very old patients
tilt table indications
