Voluntary movements to achieve a goal
Bodily movements resulting in caloric expenditure.
Define MET
Ratio of energy expenditure during activity from resting energy expenditure.
This is an absolute value.
What determines relativity in terms of physical activity ability?
Level of fitness
What are fitness related components of physical activity?
Power, composition, strength, cardio respiratory capacity and motor skill
What are health related components of physical activity?
Flexibility, body composition, endurance, strength
How do you calculate total energy expenditure?
BMR + Thermic effect of food + PA
What is BMR influenced by?
Sex, body size (> = more BMR), surface area
1 MET is equivalent to…
3.5ml of O2 per kg of body weight per min.
Or
1 kcal per kg
Categorize MET intensity
1.1-2.9 MET = light
3-5.9 MET= moderate
> 6 MET= vigorous
What age group doesn’t have PA recommendations?
Children under 6
What is baseline activity?
Everyday activities (ADLs) Light intensity
What is baseline activity good for?
It’s a starting point for sedentary individuals
Good for weight management and bone loading
How does the compendium know values?
METs should be independent of fitness and body size.
Estimations based on similar activity and self report.
