A

In the last 150 years Britain has changed from a rural to urban society, this means they are more desk bound.
Modern technology allows for minimum physical exercise.
Cars are more accessible.
In America some golf clubs make people use buggies instead of walking.

Outdoor education.

A

Learning about the outdoors. Often done by young people and taught by qualified staff.
It is done in the natural environment and sometimes semi-natural (climbing walls).
There are strict health and safety guidelines to follow.
Usually as part of a structured group.

Discuss the risk spectrum.

A

Beginners have to take part where there is a perceived risk but really they are completely safe. E.g. Abseiling on a rock wall with full safety equipment.
Committed experts take part where there is a real risk of danger where if it goes wrong it could be fatal. E.g. Rock climbing without a harness.
