Physical 1 - Chapter 5: Kinetics Flashcards
What are factors that affect the rate of chemical reactions?
Temperature
Concentration of a solution
Pressure of a gas reaction
Surface area of solid reactants
Catalyst
How does temperature affect the rate of reaction?
Higher temperature -> Higher speed of molecules -> More collisions + More energy -> Reaction is faster
How does the concentration of a solution affect the rate of reaction?
More particles in a given volume -> Collisions more likely-> Faster rate of reaction
As a reaction proceeds, reactants used up and concentration falls so rate of reaction decreases
Identical to pressure of a gas reaction
How does the pressure of a gas reaction affect the rate of reaction?
More particles in a given volume -> Collisions more likely-> Faster rate of reaction
As a reaction proceeds, reactants used up and concentration falls so rate of reaction decreases
Identical to concentration of a solution
How does the surface area of solid reactants affect the rate of reaction?
Higher total SA -> More particles can collide with gas / liquid molecules -> Higher rate of reaction
How does a catalyst affect the rate of reaction?
Use a catalyst -> Lower activation energy -> More successful collisions -> Faster rate of reaction
What is the transition state?
May not need to be known
“The species that exist at the top of the curve of an enthalpy diagram”
Also referred to as activated complex. Never mentioned in lesson so doubt this needs to be known
