Q

What are different phases of moon ?

A

Various shapes of moon seen during the month is called Phases of moon
The day on which the whole moon is visible is known as the full moon day.
After the full moon day, the size of bright part of moon reduces everyday.
On the 15th day, there is no moon. This is called no moon day.
After no moon day, only a small portion of the moon appears in the sky. This is known as the crescent moon.
And then, it increases everyday
After about 29 days, we see the full moon again

Q

Why do we see different phases of moon?

A
  1. Moon does not produce its light
  2. But sun and other stars do produce light
  3. We see the moon because the sunlight falling on it gets reflected towards us.
  4. We therefore, see only that part of the moon, from which the light of the Sun is reflected towards us

Q

What is the Significance of phases of the moon ?

A

Almost all festivals in India are celebrated according to the phases of the moon.
For example, Diwali is celebrated on the new moon day;
Budh Poornima and Guru Nanak’s birthday are celebrated on full moon day
Eidul-Fitr is observed on the day following the sighting of crescent moon.

7
Q

Why do we see only one side of moon?

A

1.We only see one side of the moon because,
the moon rotates around the Earth at the exact same speed as it rotates around its own axis

  1. So, it takes equal time to rotate and revolve
  2. This is why we see only one side of moon

Q

What is in the Moon’s Surface ?

A
  1. When astronauts landed on the moon, they found that the moon’s surface is dusty and barren.
  2. There are many craters of different sizes.
  3. It also has a large number of steep and high mountains.
  4. First astronaut to land on moon was Neil Armstrong.

Q

Why do stars appear from east to west?

A

Actually stars do not move

Because earth rotates from west to east on its axis ,it appears that stars appear to move from east to west

(Just like when we sit in moving train,it appears that all the nearby trees and buildings are moving backwards, but they are actually not moving)

13
Q

Which star does not appear to move? Why?

A

Pole star does not appear to move

It is because it lies close to axis of rotation of earth

So even when earth rotates,it does not seem to change

Q

Do stars in the sky move?

A

No they dont move in the sky
Since earth rotates from east to west direction, the stars appear to move from west to east direction.
This is like when we travel in train, it appears all places move behind us

Q

What is light year?

A

Distance travelled by light in one year is called as light year.
Light travels 3 * 10^8 Km/s in one year or 300,000 kms per year

16
Q

What is the light year distance in one year?

A

Speed of Light = 3 × 10 8 m/s

Time = 1 Year = 365 days = 365 × 24 hours = 31536000 seconds

Now,
1 Light Year = Speed × Time
= 3 × 10 8 × 31536000 m = = 94608000 × 10 8 m = 94608000 × 10 8 × 1/000 km
= 94608 × 10 8 km = 9.4608 × 10 4 × 10 8 km = 9.4608 × 10 12 km

17
Q

How much time will it take for light to reach from sun to earth?

A

Distance of sun to earth = 150000000 km
Speed of Light = 300000 km/second
Time taken = 150000000/300000 seconds
= 500 seconds

Time taken in minutes = 500 second/60
= 8.33 minutes

So, it takes around 8 minutes for Sunlight to reach earth

18
Q

What are Constellations?

A

Constellation is a group of stars forming a recognizable shape or pattern.

19
Q

Which is the brightest star in solar system. How to identify it?

A

https://www.teachoo.com/10521/3036/Constellations/category/Concepts/

20
Q

What are the planets in our solary system?

A

There are 8 planets.
Note: Pluto is not a planet. it is a dwarf planet.

https://www.teachoo.com/10522/3036/Planets-in-our-Solar-System/category/Concepts/

21
Q

Name the inner planets of the solar system

A

Planets which are close to the sun are known as the inner planet

They are Mercury,Venus,Earth,Mars

Inner planets have very few moons

22
Q

Name the outer planets of the solar system

A

Planets which are far away from sun are known as the outer planets

They are Jupiter,Saturn,Uranus,Neptune

Outer planets have large number of moons

23
Q

How does Earth appears from Moon

A

Earth appears to be of blue-green color because of the reflection of water and land on its surface

24
Q

What causes change of season on Earth

A

It is due to rotational axis of earth which is tilted

Part of earth which is nearer to sun has summers

Part of earth which is far from sun have winters

Example

In Northern Hemisphere(India,England) we have summers in May-june and winters in Dec-Jan

In Southern Hemisphere (Australia,New Zealand) there are winters in may-June and summers in Dec -Jan

25
Difference between Rotation and Revolution
Rotation Movement of planet around its axis is called Rotation Example - Earth takes one day to rotate around sun Revolution Movement of one object around another object is called revolution Example-Earth takes One Year to Complete One Revolution around the sun https://www.teachoo.com/10522/3036/Planets-in-our-Solar-System/category/Concepts/
26
What is Period of Rotation and Period of Revolution
Rotation Time taken by a planet to complete one rotation is known as the period of Rotation Earth takes 24 hours to spin once around its axis. Its period of rotation is 24 hours or a day. Revolution Time taken by a planet to complete one revolution is known as a period of Revolution Earth takes 365 days to complete one revolution around the sun. The period of revolution of earth around the sun is 365 days.
27
What is an Orbit?
Path which a planet takes to revolve around sun is called orbit Example Earth has a definite path,it always take same path while revolving around sun This path is called orbit https://www.teachoo.com/10522/3036/Planets-in-our-Solar-System/category/Concepts/
28
What are asteroids?
Small rocky bodies orbiting the sun They are like minor planets Asteroids are large number of small objects They revolve around the sun Asteroids can only be seen through large telescopes. Example Large number of asteroids are found between Mars and Jupiter https://www.teachoo.com/10523/3036/Asteroids-and-Comets/category/Concepts/
29
What are comets?
Comets also revolve around sun They have highly elliptical orbit They take number of years to complete one revolution Example - Halley's comet, which appears after every 76 years They have a bright head with a long tail Size of tail increase as it approaches sun Tail is always pointing away from sun
30
What are Meteoroids, Meteors and Meteorites?
Meteoroids → Meteors → Meteorites Meteoroids become Meteors. And if Meteors lands on Earth, It is known as meteorite Meteoroids Meteoroids is a small rock which floats in space . Meteors Meteors is a small object which enters earth's atmosphere at very high speed Due to friction of atmosphere, it gets heated up It glows and evaporates quickly
31
Why are Meteors called Shooting stars?
They cause bright streaks of light, they are actually not stars
32

33
What are meteor shower
When earth passes the tail of the comet a large number of meteors are seen These are known as Meteor shower https://www.teachoo.com/10524/3036/Meteoroids--Meteors-and-Meteorites/category/Concepts/
34
What are satellites
Celstial Bodies which revolve around planets are called satellites They can be natural or manmade(artificial satellites)
35
Difference between Natural and Artificial Satellites
https://www.teachoo.com/10525/3036/Artificial-Satellites/category/Concepts/
36
What are different uses of Artificial Satellites?
They help in forecasting weather (telling what will be weather in future) They help in broadcasting TV Radio Signals They help in telecommunication (telephone internet) They help in remote sensing .It means gathering information about a place from distance
