Phylum Porifera Flashcards
Characteristics of Phylum Porifera
Have no neurons, no true organs, have Choanocytes. can use CaCO3, or Si)2 and collagen as structural elements. They are suspension feeders, that are sessile as adults, the larvae are mobile tho.
Poiferan Body plan
Consist of the cel layers Pinacoderm, mesohyl, the choanoderm. then the atrium (space in center), the Osculum the opening at top. Then the Ostium, opening on side where water and food enter through.
Cell types of the Pinacoderm
Pinacytes, Basopinacytes, endo nd exopinacocytes, and porocytes
Cell types of the mesohyl
Archaeocytes(amoebocytes), Sclerocytes, spongocytes and collencytes
Cell types of the Choanoderm
Choanocytes
Asconoid Condition
Simplest, less than 10 cm in height. Has porocytes, atrium and a single Osculum.
Synconoid
Has Dermal Pores, Incurrent canal( where watrer enters the chambers), and Prosopyle(how water moves from chamber to chamber). Has Choanocyte chambers. Apopyle (allows water to enter the atrium) and Osculum
Leuconoid
Most advanced condition, with dermal pores , incurrent canals, prosopyle, has discrete chambers, apopyle , and excurrent canals
Class Calcarea
Have Calareous spicules, that are 1,3, or 4 rayed.Asconoid, synconoid, or Leuconoid, all are marine,
Class Hexactinnellida
Siliceous Spicules that are 6- rayed, are Leuconoid, most are deep dea.
Class Demospongiae
Siliceous spicules, not 6-rayed. Have Spongin fibers, the most diverse group of sponges, both fresh and marine species
Carnivorous Sponge
Cladorhizidae from class demospongiae.
