Phylogeny Flashcards
Understand different terms, the different types of trees, and relationship between Phyla
Taxonomy
Naming and categorizing based on shared traits; morphological, developmental, molecular
Linnaeus
Hierarchical system; binomial naming, ie Home Sapiens
Phylogeny
evolutionary history of a species or group of related species
Nodes
Branch Points, show common ancestors
Systematics
Classifies organisms, determines evolutionary history
uses Fossils, biochem, genetic data
Branch Points
show divergence of species (Specieation)
Sister Taxa
have an immediate common ancestor
Rooted Tree
includes a branch that represents the last common ancestor of all taxa in a tree
Polytomy
branch where 2 or more groups emerge; unresolved level of divergence
Outgroup
different from the rest, but some ancestor
Homologies
Phenotypic and genotypic similarities due to shared ancestry (divergent evolution)
Analogy
due to convergent evolution
Cladistics
grouping organisms by common descendants
Clade
group of species that includes ancestral species + all descendants
Monophyletic
consists of ancestor species AND all descendants
