Phylogenesis Flashcards
The goal of Taxonomy is to build phylogenies that reflects what?
Evolutionary Relationships
What is Systematics?
The Science of Taxonomy
What are the 3 kinds of phylogenies?
- Monophyletic Taxon
- Polyphyletic
- Paraphyletic
What is seen in a Monophyletic Taxon Tree?
Consists of a common ancestor and all its descendants
What are the properties of a Polyphyletic Tree?
Doesn’t contain the most recent common ancestor of all its members. Therefore, the trait its members have in common evolved separately in different places on the Phylogenetic tree.
What are the properties of a Paraphyletic Tree?
Made of groups that contains the group’s most common ancestor, doesn’t contain all the descendants of that ancestor.
What kinds of traits are used to build phylogenies?
- Homologous traits- those who similarity is due to shared ancestry
- Analogous Traits- caused by convergent evolution
