Phyla and Form & Function Flashcards
What is a phyla
A phyla is a group of organisms sharing one or more major characteristics that set them apart from all other organisms, and forming one of the main categories in biological classification that ranks above the class and below the kingdom compare division senses.
Natural selection
A process of editing, eg a drug does not select for resistant individuals, they are already present in a population. Natural selection depends on time and place, in a genetically variable population it provides an advantage in the current local environment.
Scaling laws
Manykey biological processes are affected by mass. Metabolism is proportional to M 3/4. These relationships are widespread but not always understood. You cannot make small things bigger or big things smaller without allometric problems.
Reynolds number
Re is the ratio of inertial to viscous Re forces in fluid.
When Re is high we tend to see turbulent flow
When Re is low , fluid motion is smooth or laminar.
Re = length X(relative fluid velocity/viscocity)
Since length is so important
Large fast swimming animals have to be streamlined tominimize turbulance, small or slow moving animals dont have to be.
