Phy Flashcards
Scalar
Scalar quantities have magnitude (size) only
Vector
Vector quantities have both magnitude (size) and direction.
Distance
distance describes how far an object travels.
Displacement
the change in position of the object and the direction of movement.
Speed
how fast a moving object is travelling
Velocity
speed in a particular direction
Acceleration
the rate of change in velocity
Newton’s 1st Law
An object will not change its motion unless acted on by an external unbalanced force.
Net Force
the sum of all the forces acting on the object.
Newton’s 2nd Law
an object’s acceleration is dependent on the net force and the object’s mass
Newton’s 3rd Law
For every action force there is an equal and opposite reaction force.
Gravitational Potential Energy
- Gravitational potential energy (GPE) is energy stored in objects above the Earth’s surface.
Kinetic Energy (KE)
the energy possessed by moving objects.
Work
a measure of the energy used to move the object.
Power
power is the rate at which work is being done
