A noun that names the person spoken to in a sentence, always set off with commas
Noun of Direct Address (NDA)
A noun or noun phrase that renames another noun right beside it
Appositive (app)
A group of words that starts with a preposition and ends with a noun or pronoun
Prepositional (prep)
A group of words that starts with an infinitive (to + verb) and includes modifiers and objects; functions as a noun, adjective, or adverb
Infinitive (inf)
A group of words that starts with a gerund (an ing verb acting as a noun) and includes modifiers and objects; functions as a noun
Gerund (ger)
A group of words that starts with a present (ing verb) or past (ed verb) participle and includes modifiers and objects; functions as an adjective
Participle (part)
A clause that starts with a relative pronoun (who, whom, whose, which, that) and includes any modifiers and objects; functions as an adjective
Relative Clause (RC)
Includes words, phrases, and clauses that come before the main independent clause, always set off with commas.
