What is implied consent?
When a person is not able to grant consent, the law assumes the vicim would give consent if they were able to do so. The victim may be confused, unconscious, or seriously injured. Also applies to a minor whose guardian is not present.
What is in-service training?
Takes place while you are employed as a lifeguard and is designed to help you maintain your knowledge and skills at a professional level.
What is the purpose of a rescue tube?
To help keep victims afloat.
What should a lifeguard’s hip pack include?
Gloves, whistle, bandages, resuscitation mask, etc.
What is a backboard used for?
Used to remove victims from the water when they are unable to exit the water on their own or when they have a possible injury to the head, neck, or spine.
Where are rescue buoys used?
Waterfronts and surf beaches
What does PPE stand for?
Personal protective equipment
What is PPE?
Specialized clothing, equipment, and supplies used to prevent you from coming into direct contact with a victim’s body fluids. Includes gloves and resuscitation masks.
What does BVM stand for? What is it used for?
Bag-valve-mask resuscitator. Hand-held device attached to a resuscitation mask that is used to ventilate a victim in respiratory arrest or when performing CPR.
What is a rip current?
A strong channel of water that flows offshore beginning near the shore and often extending well beyond the breaking waves. Can create fast moving currents that may exceed 8 ft per sec. Can occur near physical structures and underwater features.
What are common indicators of a rip current?
A channel of churning, choppy water. An area having a noticeable difference in water color. A line of foam, seaweed or debris moving steadily away from shore. A break in the incoming wave pattern.
What are some specific areas to inspect for safety?
Rescue equipment. Communication equipment. Pool decks or waterfront shorelines. Locker rooms. Structures. Recreational equipment.
What do you do when stuck in a rip current?
Allow the current to take you away from shore. Once the current weakens, swim parallel to the beach then back to shore at an angle.
What are common underwater hazards?
Holes in the swimming area and sudden drop offs. Submerged objects. Bottom conditions. Slope of the bottom and water depth. Broken glass or sharp objects. Shells, barnacles, marine life.
What does AED stand for? What does it do?
Automated external defibrillator. Portable electronic device that analyzes the heart’s rhythm and can deliver an electrical shock, which helps to re-establish an effective rhythm. Used in conjunction with CPR on unconscious victims with no sign of moving or breathing.
