what does “CLEARED ON TRACK” mean?
proceed along the track you requested, you’re required to read back your route.
what does “CLEARED… AT” mean? (e.g CLEARED AT 5,000FT)
you must go to and remain at the clear altitude. once at cleared altitude, if you wish to climb or descend you need to request, and obtain, amended clearance. You must read back cleared altitudes.
what does “CLEARED… AT BELOW” (Altitude) mean?
can fly at the cleared altitude or any altitude below the cleared altitude. Must read back cleared altitudes.
what does “DESCENT TO” and “CLIMB TO” mean?
unless advised otherwise you commence your descent or climb ASAP. must read back these instructions.
what does “WHEN READY…” (WHEN READY DESCEND TO 2000FT) mean?
can be used by ATC when issuing a clearance to descend or climb. means that you can start your descent to the altitude given when ready. must read back.
what does “REPORT YOU LEVEL” mean?
report altitude
what does “IDENTIFIED” mean?
when radar controller has positively identifed which target on the radar screen is your aircraft. Acknowledge this using your callsign.
what does “FLY HEADING” mean?
means turn onto the given heading and follow this heading until ATC advises further. Must read back.
what does “RESUME OWN NAVIGATION”?
used normally after the radar controller has vectored you (steered) means that vectoring is finished and that you may turn as required to regain your cleared track. response = “RESUMING OWN NAVIGATION TO…”
what does “SQUAWK…” mean? (SQUAWK 3421)
set the code as instructed, which might involve changing the numbers (code) on your transponder to the numbers given. you must read back.
what does “RESET SQUAWK” mean?
reselect the assigned mode/code. This phrase could be used if it appears to the controller that you’ve selected the wrong mode/code on your transponder. must read back.
what does “CONFIRM SQUAWK” mean?
confirm the code set on the transponder. Your response would be to check that you have the correct code numbers selected on transponder. must read back
what does “SQUAWK CHARLIE” mean?
set transponder so that it’ll transmit your altitude information (Mode C). Can be done by selecting the ALT function. if no mode C advise the controller.
what does “CONFIRM level” mean?
check and report altitude (1000ft) beffore ATC can use your Mode C read out on radar screen for separation purposes, there’s a requirement to check that it’s accurate. ATC’s readouts must be within 200ft of your actual height, to be accurate when reporting your altitude.
what does “SQUAWK (code) IDENT” mean?
Press the button on the transponder labeled IDENT. causes the radar symbol to flash so that the controller can identify you. no read back.
what does “CHECK ALTIMETER AND CONFIRM” mean?
check that you’ve got the correct setting on your altimeter subscale (correct QNH) and report altitude.
what does “STOP SQUAWK” mean?
terminate transponder operation, select OFF.
what does “STOP SQUAWK CHARLIE WRONG INDICATION” mean?
having tried the previous transmission and procedure to correct a wrong readout of your altitude, it’s still not within acceptable limits.
could also be that altitude readout on-screen is erratic. better not to transmit mode C info rather than have it wrong. Stop squawk set transponder to ON.
what does “SQUAWK” mean?
return to normal transponder operation, i.e set transponder function to default
what does “SQUAWK STANDBY” mean?
select SBY on transponder.
what does “SQUAWK MAYDAY” mean?
controller wishes you to squawk emergency code 7700.
what should transponder bet set to after engine start?
SBY
what should the transponder be set to after takeoff?
ON or ALT
what should the transponder be set to after landing?
OFF or SBY
