Q

What happens during the Calvin cycle?

A

Uses the ATP made during the light reaction to recombine H2O and CO2 into glucose
Happens in the stroma

Q

Pigments

A

Pigments absorb light energy and turn in into usable energy (ATP)
Chlorophyll (green pigment) is the most important type in most plants (2 types = a and b)
Chlorophyll is stored in the chloroplast and allows the light reaction to occur
There are other pigments in most plants called carotenoids and xanthophyll; these are yellow, red and orange in color

Q

Photo system one?

A

Also called P700 (absorb red light with 700nm wavelength)
First one discover but is the second involved in the light reaction

15
Q

Next

A

The electron bounces to the next energy level; this is unstable so it quickly loses energy and falls back

16
Q

Then

A

The electron is passed to an electron acceptor which is reduced and the chlorophyll is oxidized

17
Q

Next

A

As the electrons move down the electron transport chain, H+ ions are pumped in the thylakoid lumen

18
Q

What does this create

A

This creates a concentration gradient

19
Q

Next

A

H+ ions diffuse back into the stroma through the ATP Synthase creating ATP

20
Q

Then

A

Electrons are re-excited at Photosystem I before they are passed to another electron acceptor

21
Q

Next

A

Final electron acceptor is NADP+ which is reduced to NADPH

22
Q

Lastly

A

PSII regains electrons by splitting water; this also makes O2
