Photosynthesis & Respiration Flashcards
ATP
Adenosine triphosphate, energy-carrying molecule found in the cells of all living things. ATP captures chemical energy obtained from the breakdown of food molecules and releases it to fuel other cellular processes.
Autotroph
An organism that is able to form nutritional organic substances from simple inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide.
Cellular Respiration
Cellular respiration is the process by which organisms use oxygen to break down food molecules to get chemical energy for cell functions.
Chloroplast
A plastid that contains chlorophyll and in which photosynthesis takes place.
Glucose
Glucose is the main type of sugar in the blood and is the major source of energy for the body cells.
Heterotroph
A heterotroph is an organism that eats other plants or animals for energy and nutrients
Photosynthesis
The process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water.
Producer
An organism that produces/makes its own food. Producers get their energy by making their own food.
Monosaccharide
A sugar that is not decomposable into simpler sugars by hydrolysis, is classed as either an aldose or ketose, and contains one or more hydroxyl groups per molecule
Polysaccharide
A carbohydrate that can be decomposed by hydrolysis into two or more molecules of monosaccharides
Starch
an odorless, tasteless white substance occurring widely in plant tissue…It is a polysaccharide which functions as a carbohydrate store
