Photosynthesis Keywords Flashcards
Stomata
Small pores/spaces in the epidermis to allow gas exchange. Mainly found on the lower side of the leaf
Mesophytic
A leaf found in a temperate environment (a not water / temperature stressed area
Guard cells
Two curved cells, around the stoma which allow it to open and close
Variegated
A leaf with different colours e.g green and white
Hydrogen carbonate indicator
pH indicator that shows if Co2 is increasing or decreasing
Photosynthesis
The process by which plants make foods - they use sunlight, to make Co2 into glucose
Epidermis
The outer covering of an organism
Chloroplast
A packet of chlorophyll (green pigment) present in many plant cells
Cuticle
A waxy layer on the leafs surface
Destarched
When a plant is left in a cupboard for 48 hours and the starch has been used up
Intercellular spaces
Spaces between cells
Spongy mesophyll
Lies below the palisade mesophyll where the cells are loosely packed with many airspaces between them
Adaptions
Changes to an organism to make it better suited to the plant
Palisade Mesophyll
Top layer of a leaf where most of photosynthesis occurs (they are tall and rectangular in shape) packed with chloroplasts to capture lots of sunlight
Chlorophyll
The green pigment in chloroplasts, which captures sunlight
