Photosynthesis and Respiration Flashcards
ATP
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP), energy-carrying molecule found in the cells of all living things.
Autotroph
An autotroph is an organism that can produce its own food using light, water, carbon dioxide, or other chemicals.
Cellular Respiration
The process by which organisms combine oxygen with foodstuff molecules, diverting the chemical energy in these substances into life-sustaining activities and discarding, as waste products, carbon dioxide and water.
Chloroplast
A plastid that contains chlorophyll and is the site of photosynthesis
Glucose
The main type of sugar in the blood and is the major source of energy for the body’s cells.
Heterotroph
An organism deriving its nutritional requirements from complex organic substances.
Photosynthesis
The process by which green plants and certain other organisms transform light energy into chemical energy.
Producer
An organism that produces. (makes) its own food.
Monosaccharide
A sugar that is not decomposable into simpler sugars by hydrolysis, is classed as either an aldose or ketose, and contains one or more hydroxyl groups per molecule.
Polysaccharide
The most abundant carbohydrate found in food.
Starch
A polysaccharide comprising glucose monomers joined in α 1,4 linkages.
