Photosynthesis and Respiration Flashcards
ATP
energy-carrying molecule found in the cells of all living things. ATP captures chemical energy obtained from the breakdown of food molecules and releases it to fuel other cellular processes. Adenosine triphosphate.
Autotroph
an organism that is able to form nutritional organic substances from simple inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide.
Cellular
relating to or consisting of living cells.
Respiration
the action of breathing.
Chloroplast
a plastid that contains chlorophyll and in which photosynthesis takes place.
Glucose
a simple sugar which is an important energy source in living organisms and is a component of many carbohydrates.
Heterotroph
an organism deriving its nutritional requirements from complex organic substances.
Producer
a person, company, or country that makes, grows, or supplies goods or commodities for sale.
Monosaccharide
any of the class of sugars (e.g., glucose) that cannot be hydrolyzed to give a simpler sugar.
Polysaccharide
a carbohydrate (e.g. starch, cellulose, or glycogen) whose molecules consist of a number of sugar molecules bonded together.
Starch
Starch or amylum is a polymeric carbohydrate consisting of numerous glucose units joined by glycosidic bonds called polymers. This polysaccharide is produced by most green plants as energy storage.
