Photosynthesis and Respiration Flashcards
photosynthesis
means “light- putting together”- is the process of converting light energy into food (glucose)
light reaction
first step in photosynthesis- water is split and 2 ATP formed
light independent reaction
also called the Dark or Calvin cycle it is the second step of photosynthesis- CO2 is joined to the hydrogen from the split water of the light reaction forming PGAL which can then be turned into glucose
thylakoid
where chlorophyll is found- site of the light reaction
stroma
where the light independent (dark) reaction takes place
chloroplast
the cell organelle where photosynthesis occurs
ATP
adenosine triphosphate- the energy molecule used by all cells
ADP
adenosine diphosphate- the molecule used by all cells to form ATP
phosphorylation
addition of a phosphate molecule to another molecule
de-phosphorylation
removal of a phosphate molecule from another molecule
heterotroph
“other- feeder” eats others for energy
photoautotroph
makes food using sunlight
chemoautotroph
makes food using chemicals and heat from the earth
herbivore
plant eater
carnivore
flesh eater
omnivore
eats both plants and animals
cellular respiration
process of using oxygen to convert the energy of glucose into the energy of ATP
glycolysis
takes place in the cytoplasm-means “glucose splitting” the first stage of respiration- no oxygen needed- results in 2 ATP formed
Kreb’s cycle
takes place in the mitochondria-second stage of respiration- 6CO2 produced along with 2 ATP
electron transport chain
takes place in the mitochondria-third stage of respiration- 6 H20 produced along with 32 ATP
36 ATP
number of ATP produced from cellular respiration
aerobic vs. anaerobic respiration
aerobic means with air (oxygen) while anaerobic means without air (oxygen)
lactic acid fermentation
type of anaerobic respiration performed by animals when short on oxygen- forms 2 ATP along with lactic acid
alcoholic fermentation
type of anaerobic respiration performed by micro-organisms like yeast when short on oxygen- forms 2 ATP along with ethyl alcohol
