Photosynthesis and respiration Flashcards
What do plants need energy for?
- Photosynthesis, active transport , DNA replication, cell division and protein synthesis
Photosynthesis equations?
6CO2 +6H2O -> C6H12O6 +6O2
As animals can not “make their own glucose”, how can they get glucose?
By eating plants, and then respire this glucose.
Aerobic respiration
C6H12O6+ 6O2 -> CO2 +H2O
what is Photophosphorylation? (def)
Adding phosphate to a molecule using light
What is photolysis (def)?
The splitting of a molecule using light
What coenzyme in photosynthesis carries hydrogen
NADP
What are photosynthetic pigments and give some examples?
And where are the pigments found?
Coloured substances that absorb the light energy needed for photosynthesis
e. g: Chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotene
- These pigments are found in the thylakoid membrane
What is a photosystem?
A pigment and a protein attached together
What are the 2 types of photosynthetic pigments that a photosystem has?
1) primary pigments - reaction centre where electrons are excited.
2) Accessory pigments - Makes up light harvesting systems:
- they surround the reaction centres and transfer light energy to them, to make an electron become excited.
PSI ?
Photosystem I
Absorbs light best at a wavelength of 700nm
PS2?
Photosystem II
Absorbs light best at 680nm wave length
What are carbohydrates that are produced by photosynthesis but not used straight away, stored as?
Stored as starch grain
