photosynthesis and limiting factors Flashcards
What is a limiting factor?
It restricts the rate of a reaction.
What is the effect of a plant growing in mineral-deficient soil?
May not absorb enough minerals to produce lots of chlorophyll
What are the factors that could be limiting factors? (4)
-chlorophyll concentration
-temperature
-carbon dioxide concentration
-Light intensity
Name and example of when chlorophyll concertation could become a limiting factor?
Plants that grow in mineral-deficient soil wont be able to absorb enough minerals to produce lots of chlorophyll
Name an example of when light intensity could become a limiting factor
During night time (when not enough sunlight is given)
Why does winter contribute to the limiting of the rate of photosynthesis?
During winter enzymes needed for photosynthesis work slowly in cooler temperatures.
Name an example when carbon dioxide concentration could become a limiting factor
In warm and bright conditions
Why does extreme hot temperature become a limiting factor
Then enzyme will start to denature having the substrate no longer fit the active site.
What are you testing when you are using a lamp and an aquatic plant?
Testing the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis
Name an example of an aquatic plant
Pondweed
What would you do with the lamp to measure the effect on light intensity?
Move it closer and further away to the apparatus
Name all the equipment used to measure the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis (6)
Ruler
apparatus
gas syringe
light source
Canadian pondweed
sodium hydrogencarbonate
What is the chemical used in the investigation that supplies carbon dioxide?
sodium hydrogencarbonate
Name how to measure the amount of oxygen produced accurately
Using an apparatus to accurately count the volume of oxygen produced
What is the equation used to form a graph on light intensity?
1/ distance²
