What is an organelle?
An organelle is a small part of the cell that does a specific job.
Which two organelles do plant cells have that animal cells do not?
Cell wall and chloroplast.
What is a biotic factor? Give an example.
The living things in an ecosystem.
A dog, a plant, a fungus, a bacteria are some examples.
What is an abiotic factor? Give an example.
The nonliving things in an ecosystem.
Clouds, sunlight, temperature, rocks are some examples.
What is an ecosystem? Give an example.
All the living and nonliving things interacting in a certain area.
A forest, a desert, the coral reef are all examples.
What is a producer? Give an example.
An organism that can make its own energy storage molecules.
A flower or a tree or any plant is an example.
What is a consumer? Give an example.
An organism that needs to eat in order to get energy storage molecules.
A human or a horse or any animal is an example.
What is a decomposer? Give an example.
An organism that gets energy storage molecules (such as glucose) by breaking down dead matter.
An example is an earthworm, a fungus or a bacteria.
What is photosynthesis?
The chemical reaction by which plants and other producers use energy from the Sun to change carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and glucose.
In which organelle does photosynthesis take place?
Chloroplasts
What is glucose?
Glucose is a sugar molecule that releases energy into the cell during cellular respiration.
Who can do photosynthesis?
Producers
What are the reactants and products of photosynthesis?
The reactants are carbon dioxide and water. The products are oxygen and glucose.
During our elodea photosynthesis lab, how did we know the elodea was taking in carbon dioxide?
Because the color of the water went from yellow (high carbon dioxide) to blue (no carbon dioxide) indicating the elodea had used up all the CO2 to use for photosynthesis.
What is cellular respiration?
The chemical reaction between oxygen and glucose that releases energy into cells.
In which organelle does cellular respiration take place?
Mitochondria
Who can do cellular respiration?
Producers, consumers, decomposers (all living things)
What is ATP?
Energy for our cells that is produced during cellular respiration.
What are the reactants and products of cellular respiration?
Reactants: Oxygen and glucose.
Products: Carbon Dioxide, Water and ATP (energy that can be used by the cell).
During our cellular respiration demo, how did we know the yeast was producing carbon dioxide?
Because there was a layer of foamy bubbles (the CO2) that was produced at the top of the solution.
