Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Flashcards
Photosynthesis
During photosynthesis, plant cells use the energy in sunlight to make glucose from carbon dioxide and water.
Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts of plant cells.
Formula:
6CO²+6H²O+light energy —> C⁶H¹²O⁶+6O²
Cellular Respiration
During Cellular Respiration, organisms obtain energy from food.
Cellular Respiration takes place in the mitochondria of animal and plant cells.
Formula:
C⁶H¹²O+6O²—–>6CO²+6H²O+ATP
-Extra Card-
Cellular Respiration
In cellular respiration, food(glucose) is broken down into carbon dioxide and water. Energy is released.
Energy
Stored in the form of ATP(Adeonosine Triphosphate )
Released as heat to maintain body temperature (homeostasis).
Aerobic Respiration
Respiration using oxygen to break food molecules.
¨ Aero ¨ means air, which contains oxygen.
Breaks down glucose and combines broken down products with oxygen, making water and carbon dioxide.
Anaerobic Respiration
Low or no oxygen present.
“ An “ in anaerobic means ¨ without ¨
Glucose molecule is only partially broken down, not all of the energy is released.
Fewer ATP molecules are formed.
Fermentation
The breakdown of glucose without the use of oxygen.
Lactic Acid
Forms in human muscles when there is not enough oxygen to break down glucose, which causes cramping.
