Photosynthesis Flashcards
1
Q
Plants that grow in shade…
A
Generally have more grana (stacks) and more thylakoids per granum
2
Q
What is a stack of grana thylakoids called?
A
A granum
3
Q
What is an accumulation response?
A
- when leaves are in shade
- the chloroplasts accumulate on the top of leaf cells
- improves acquisition of light energy
4
Q
What is an avoidance response?
A
- when leaves are in bright, direct sunlight
- the chloroplasts move to the sides of the cells
- protects them from possible photodamage
5
Q
Where do light reactions occur?
A
In the thylakoid membranes
6
Q
Where do dark reactions occur?
A
In the stroma, the fluid inside the chloroplast
7
Q
Where is PSII, and what does it do (in basic terms)?
A
- in the grana thylakoid membranes
- captures light energy, has an electron transport chain
8
Q
Where is PSI, and what does it do (in basic terms)?
A
- in the unstacked stroma thylakoids
- electron transport and ATP synthesis
9
Q
Light reactions…
A
- capture light energy
- convert it to chemical bond energy (ATP & NADPH)
10
Q
Dark reactions…
A
- enzymatic fixation of CO2 into carbohydrates
- utilizes ATP and NADPH from the light reactions
- calvin cycle
