Photosynthesis Flashcards
Photosynthesis
A chemical reaction which plants convert energy from the Sun to chemical energy; the reaction converts carbon dioxide and water to sugar and oxygen.
Carbon Dioxide
A clear odorless gas which plants use as a raw material in photosynthesis.
Reactants
A substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction.
Radiant Energy
Energy from the sun that reaches Earth as visible light, ultraviolet light, and infrared radiation. (heat)
Chemical Energy
Energy that is stored within a molecule.
Chloroplast
Organelle in plant cells used to make food. It contains a light-trapping pigment called chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll
A light-trapping pigment in the chloroplasts of plant cells.
Glucose
A simple sugar made by plants during photosynthesis. Plants store long chains of glucose as starch.
Starch
Long chains of glucose stored in plants.
Products
A substance produced as a result of a chemical change.
Oxygen
A clear odorless gas that is a waste product of plants during photosynthesis.
Turgor Pressure
The pressure, or force of the water inside a plant cell against the outside, or cell wall.
Geotropism
The response of a plant to gravity.
Phototropism
The growth of a plant toward or away from light.
