Photosynthesis Flashcards
What do plants suffer if they do not have enough mineral ions from the soil?
Deficiency issues.
Why are nitrates needed?
Nitrates are needed to make proteins and for growth. A lack of nitrates leads to stunted growth.
What are magnesium ions needed for?
Magnesium ions are required to produce chlorophyll and thus for photosynthesis. Without these ions plants can suffer from chlorosis and suffer from yellow leaves.
What sort of diseases can plants suffer from?
Viral, Bacterial, Fungal pathogens.
Signs of plant disease.
Abnormal growth, spots on the leaves, rot or decay, stunted growth, malformed stems or leaves, discolouration.
Physical Defences
Waxy Cuticle(barrier to stop pathogens from entering) Cell wall(Another barrier) Layer of dead cells (surrounds the stem acting as a barrier against pathogens)
Chemical Defences.
Posions: Deters herbivores from eating the plants e.g. Fox Glove
Antibacterial: used to kill bacteria e.g. Mint plant
