Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the overall equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6 H2O -> C6H12O6 + 6O2
How is a leaf adapted for photosynthesis?
Large SA Thin for short diffusion distance Numerous stomata Xylem Phloem
What are the 3 main steps in photosynthesis?
1) capturing light energy (chlorophyll)
2) light dependent reaction
3) light independent reaction
What is the main structure of a chloroplast?
Thylakoids = disk like structures, site of light dep., attached to others by inter granal lamellae
Grana = stacks of up to 100 thylakoids
Stroma = fluid filled matrix, light indep. (Starch grains)
Summarise the light dependent reaction
1) PHOTOLYSIS
2) electrons gain energy from light absorbed by chlorophyll in photo system
3) electron carriers ox/red and energy
4) energy pulls proton through thylakoids membrane (active)
5) high proton conc in thylakoid space
6) proton moves back through membrane
7) activates ATP synthase
8) in stroma proton reduces NADP
How is the thylakoid membrane adapted?
Large SA for attachment of chlorophyll
Granal membranes attached to ATP enzymes
Where does the light dependent (1) reaction take place?
Thylakoids
Where does the light independent (2) reaction take place?
Stroma
