Photosynthesis Flashcards
1
Q
what happens in the light-dependent reactions?
A
- photoionisation
- photolysis
- photophosphorylation
- chemiosmosis
2
Q
what is photoionisation?
A
- light energy is absorbed by the chlorophyll
- this excites electrons in the chlorophyll to a higher energy level
- the excited electrons are released from chlorophyll
- leaving a positively charged chlorophyll molecule
3
Q
what is photolysis?
A
- light energy splitting water into oxygen, electrons and protons
4
Q
what is the equation for photolysis?
A
2H2O –> 4H+ + 4e- + O2
5
Q
what is a photosystem?
A
- capture light energy
- protein + pigments
6
Q
what is chemiosmosis?
A
- electrons flow down the electron transport chain, this creates a proton gradient across the membrane to drive ATP synthesis
7
Q
what happens in the light independent reaction? (name the cycle)
A
Calvin Cycle
8
Q
where does the Calvin Cycle take place?
A
stroma of the chloroplasts
