photosynthesis Flashcards
what is photosynthesis
.reaction where light energy is used to split apart bonds in water molecules(photolysis) to combine hydrogen with CO2 to produce glucose
.oxygen is a waste product and so is released into the atmosphere
how is chloroplast adapted to photosynthesise
.contains stacks of thylakoid membrane(grana) which contain chlorophyll
.contains stroma(fluid surrounding grana) which contains all the enzymes for light dependent stage of photo
what happens in the light-dependent reaction
.electrons are excited to a higher energy level by the energy in chlorophyll molecules
.electrons are passed down the electron transport chain from one carrier to the next
.that process generated ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate (photophosphorylation)
.electrons are also transferred to NADP along with a proton to form reduced NADP
what happens in the light-independent reaction(calvin cycle)
.RuBP combines with CO2(carbon fixation) and is catalysed by RUBISCO
.RuBP is converted into 2 GP molecules
.reduced NADP and ATP convert GP into TP
.some TP are used to make glucose
.other TP is used to reform RuBP using ATP
how does light intensity being the limiting factor affect photo
.light dependent reaction will slow = lower amount of ATP and reduced NADP for calvin cycle
.less TP is formed = RuBP levels falls
how does CO2 conc being the limiting factor affect photo
independent reaction will slow
how does temp being the limiting factor affect photo
.molecules will have lower kinetic energy so enzyme-controlled reactions slow
