Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the first stage of photosynthesis called?
Light Reactions
What is the second stage of photosynthesis called?
Carbon Fixation
Where is the site of photosynthesis?
Chloroplasts
What is the name of the green pigment that captures light energy?
Chlorophyll
What are the three chemical elements that make up a carbohydrate?
Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen
What are the three factors that can limit the rate of photosynthesis?
Temperature, Light intensity and Carbon Dioxide Concentration
What is the by-product formed in stage 1 and its fate?
Oxygen, Diffuses out of leaf
What are the two substances produced in stage 1 that are needed for stage 2?
ATP and Hydrogen
Glucose produced in photosynthesis can be converted into…
Energy for respiration, starch for storage and cellulose to build up the cell wall
What is the function of ATP in stage 2?
Together with hydrogen, it joins with carbon dioxide to form sugar (glucose)
Describe the first stage of photosynthesis
Light energy from the sun it trapped by the chlorophyll and is converted into chemical energy which is used to generate ATP. Water is split into hydrogen and oxygen. The oxygen diffuses out the leaf. The hydrogen and ATP are carried over to the second stage.
Describe the second stage of photosynthesis
It is a series of enzyme-controlled reactions. The ATP and hydrogen produced from stage 1 are used. They join with carbon dioxide to form sugar (glucose)
What is the raw material for light reactions?
Water
