Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the formula for photosynthesis?
CO2 + H2O + sunlight → O2 + sugar (glucose)
What does chlorophyll do?
It absorbs sunlight for energy
Where does photosynthesis happen?
In the chloroplasts of plant cells
What are the two steps of photosynthesis?
Light reaction (makes energy) and dark reaction (makes sugar)
Why is chlorophyll green?
It reflects green light while absorbing other colors
What does the light reaction produce?
ATP (energy) and oxygen
What does the dark reaction use?
CO2 and energy to make sugar
Why is CO2 important in photosynthesis?
It’s used to make sugar (glucose)
What are pigments in photosynthesis?
Molecules that absorb light, like chlorophyll
What is starch in photosynthesis?
It’s the stored form of sugar in plants
What does NADP+ do?
It carries electrons during the light reaction
What is NADPH?
It’s the energy-carrying molecule after NADP+ gains electrons
What are thylakoids?
Membrane sacs in the chloroplast where light reactions happen
What is the stroma?
The fluid around thylakoids where the dark reaction happens
What happens in the light reaction?
Light is absorbed by chlorophyll, and energy is made (ATP, NADPH)
