Photosynthesis Flashcards
A waxy layer that prevents water loss and ensures the plant has enough water to carry out photosynthesis.
Cuticle
A single layer containing few or no chloroplasts.
Upper epidermis
Cells are packed tightly and contain chloroplasts to maximize energy production during photosynthesis.
Palisade mesophyll
Facilitates the exchange of gases. Cells are packed loosely.
Spongy mesophyll
Regulates gas exchange and prevents water loss.
Lower epidermis
Open and close the stomata to rescue the rate of transpiration (the process of water movement).
Guard cells
Allow the intake of CO2 and limit the loss of water due to evaporation.
Stoma (plural is stomata)
Help with water and dissolved mineral absorption. Transport water and nutrients to the plant.
Vascular bundle
Transports water from the roots to the stems.
Xylem
Transports sugar (food) from the roots to the stems.
Phloem
Where light-dependent reactions and the Calvin cycle take place.
Chloroplast
Absorb sunlight needed for photosynthesis to occur.
Thylakoid
Stacks of thylakoids that are interconnected.
Granum (plural is grana)
A fluid that contains grana (stacks of thylakoids that are interconnected).
