photosynthesis Flashcards
what happens in the light dependant stage of photosynthesis
photon(light) absorption
photolysis (water being broken down by light )
electron transport chain
formation of ATP and NADPH
where does the light dependant reaction take place
the thylakoid membrane
what happens during light absorbtion in photosystem 2
light is captured by accessory pigments and funnelled down the cone shape to the primary pigment p680
p680 is excited and loses electrons which go into the electron transport chain
what happens during photolysis
in the thylakoid space water (from the roots) is broken down by light energy into oxygen which binds with another oxygen from another photolysis reaction forming o2 and then leaves, hydrogen ions and electrons which replace the electrons lost in p680 during light absorbtion
what happens during the electron transport chain
electrons are moved from carrier protein to carrier protein down the chain till they end up at ps1
they move to carrier proteins as the proteins have a positive iron ion
the electron gives the protein enough energy to pump a proton (h+) into the thylakoid space against the concentration gradient
